Use the “SLAM” Method to Spot Phishing Emails

This video will reiterate how important it is that you and your employees are well-trained to spot malicious emails. In a nutshell, you can use the SLAM Method to help quickly identify suspicious emails.

Sender – Check the sender closely. Look for misspelled domains, or a completely different email address than the name of the sender. Ultimately, if you don’t recognize the sender, proceed cautiously and don’t open attachments.

Links – Hover over (but don’t click) on any links, and avoid clicking on any links that you don’t recognize. You can also type in the URL of the site directly.

Attachments – Don’t open attachments from anyone that you don’t know, and be suspicious of attachments from people that you know, but weren’t expecting.

Message – Check the subject line and body for suspicious language, misspelled words, and bad grammar.

If your organization has a spam filter, you may be able to submit the email as an example of spam or phishing. Or your organization may have a tool for analyzing messages for phishing. Always feel free to reach out to us for assistance.
