What To Do Right Now To Protect Your Network Against Current Threats Security Info from The Fulcrum GroupWith increasing security threats like Cryptolocker, Heartbleed, and most recently, the Bash bug (aka, "Shellshock"), its more important than ever to ensure your network is protected. ZDNet recently published 5 specific recommendations you can implement RIGHT NOW to ensure your network is protected.
  • Patch your systems. Obtain the latest patches from your vendor and patch your Bash to the latest version. Bear in mind that patches may be reissued by the maintainer and new patches are expected for Bash vulnerabilities which remain unpatched.
  • Check your exposure. Red Hat has an excellent guide on how to determine if your system is unpatched and vulnerable (link).
  • If you cannot patch Bash, or a patch is not available for your platform, consider switching to another shell.
  • Update your network and server security products. Make sure your IPS systems are updated with the correct rule sets to detect and prevent exploitation attempts.
  • Maintain vigilance against rogue servers and access points in your network and on your premises.

Why Business Owners Should Consider A Security Audit Free Security Assessment from The Fulcrum GroupNetwork security audits and assessments play an important role in maintaining a healthy and safe network. No longer a task relegated to larger companies (in part because small businesses find themselves in the bullseye for mal-intent but also can be at the mercy of compliance laws, human error and simple security failings of involved systems), most small businesses incorporate an audit into their procedures at least once per year. Business owners should note that their websites, desktop PCs and laptop computers, cell phones, and all online services used to manage every aspect of their business are all potential vulnerable points. Inadequate protection (or if security always seems to get re-prioritized) may lead to their company not being able to survive a chink in the armor. The Fulcrum Group can perform a comprehensive IT security audit of your IT security infrastructure. We can perform audits of your internal network security, external network security, WiFi security, and help you prepare for compliance audits such as HIPAA or PCI.  Contact us for a free proposal!

Tech Tips:  7 Safety Tips From HackersTech Tips from The Fulcrum Group, Dallas Fort Worth IT Managed Services Provider Here's a good collection of online safety tips straight from those who would know: 1. Turn off your phone's Wifi and Bluetooth. Keeping these features "on" all the time makes it easy for strangers to slip into your phone. 2. Use 2-Step Authentication. If a password breach occurs, you still have an extra layer of protection. 3.  Create a smart password strategy. Use some long and unique passphrases for your most sensitive online info (banking, email) and consider a password manager for others. 4.  Use HTTPS on every website. If you only see HTTP in the address bar, anyone can spy on your Internet session. 5. Take the time to tweak your home Wifi. 6.  Don't hide your home Wifi. Give the devices you trust access to a  safe and secure environment so they're not actively scanning for a potentially unsafe one. 7.  Think twice before buying into smart appliances. Try not to get lured into cool new tech-driven appliances at the expense of your safety and privacy. The article can be read in its entirety here.
