It’s not an exaggeration to say that this suite of generative AI tools within the Microsoft 365 suite fundamentally alters the way we work. But what exactly is it? How will it enhance both organizations and employees? And what factors should be considered before implementation?
Requirement Tips
Microsoft 365 Apps must be deployed. Use the Microsoft 365 Apps setup guide in the Microsoft 365 admin center to deploy to your users.
Users must have Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) accounts. You can add or sync users using the onboarding wizard in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
Copilot for Microsoft 365 is available as an add-on plan with one of the following licensing prerequisites:
- Microsoft 365 E5
- Microsoft 365 E3
- Office 365 E3
- Office 365 E5
- Microsoft 365 Business Standard
- Microsoft 365 Business Premium
- Microsoft 365 A5 for faculty*
- Microsoft 365 A3 for faculty*
- Office 365 A5 for faculty*
- Office 365 A3 for faculty*
The Office Feature Updates task is required for core Copilot experiences in apps such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote, to work properly. This task should be allowed to run on its regular schedule, and allowed to access the required network resources.

Some features in Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365, such as file restore and OneDrive management, require that users have a OneDrive account. You can use the OneDrive setup guide in the Microsoft 365 admin center to enable OneDrive for your users.
Deployment Tips
Before you can assign Copilot licenses, you need to make sure that you’ve already provisioned users in your tenant. If you haven’t done so yet, you can follow the steps in the Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 setup guide or Add users and assign licenses in Microsoft 365. These resources will guide you through the process of creating users and assigning licenses. To assign and manage Copilot licenses, you can use the Microsoft 365 admin center. Here are the steps:
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center and go to Billing > Licenses.
- Select Copilot for Microsoft 365.
- In the product details page, assign licenses to users and manage their access to Copilot and other apps and services.
- To check if a user has been added, go to Users and then Active Users. The user will be displayed along with their active license.
We recommend that you enable all feedback settings for the Microsoft 365 Apps. This allows Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 users to provide details with their thumbs up or thumbs down reaction to what Copilot produced from their prompt. You can use either the cloud policy service or group policies to enable the feedback for your users. Once all the policies are enabled, users will have the option to provide logs, screenshots, an email address for further contact about their feedback submission.
After your users have had a chance to use Copilot, we recommend running and reviewing the Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 usage report to get a summary of user adoption, retention, and engagement with Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365. The report can be found in the Microsoft 365 admin center under Reports > Usage.
IT administrator Tips
- Microsoft 365 Business Standard, Business Premiun, E3, or E5 are licensing prerequisites.
- Entra ID- based account is required.
- Must buy and assign the license to user and they must sign in with that account
- Install may experience issues if company managing updates, you have volume license install or you might need to Update License in one of your apps
- Several features require users to have a OneDrive account
- Download newest versions of Office 365 from tenant and install. NOTE: Outlook Copilot requires “New” version for functionality.
- The richness of the cross-app experience will depend on the data sources indexed by Microsoft 365. Tenants with the richest data in Microsoft 365 (Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams) will get the best result
